If you were in a beach house Charleston this past weekend, my goodness you had a wide choice of fun things to do. Whether it was the Party at the Point Friday, Shaggin’ on the Cooper Saturday, the Blessing of the Fleet Sunday, or the Rice Festival, there was a myriad of ways to entertain the folks in your luxury house on Isle of Palms.
The neat thing about all of these events, is that they reflect a unique quality or facet of the culture of the Carolina Lowcountry. The economy was founded on rice centuries ago. The Shag is the official state dance of South Carolina. Our local shrimpers and fisherman help bring in some of the sea’s bounty. You can’t spend a week in one of our Isle of Palms vacation rentals without eating some fresh seafood at least once. And the Party at the Point offers one of the best views of historic Charleston Harbor and the beloved Yorktown.
There’s another festival coming up that in many ways is the major one of the year, at least in terms of quality, duration, influence and global reach.
For the first time ever, the readers of Southern Living magazine have ranked the best festivals in the South.
Interesting, Charleston boasts numbers one and two on the list of five.
“South’s Best Festival” according to the readers of Southern Living magazine are:
- Spoleto Festival USA
- Charleston Wine + Food Festival
- New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival
- Memphis in May International Festival
- Annual National Shrimp Festival (Gulf Shores, Alabama)

Piccolo Spoleto has also just announced its festival lineup. As usual they announce their performers and schedules much later than their big sister Spoleto does, no doubt because they have so many more events to coordinate and finalize. Their guide for Piccolo Spoleto 2018 is a whopping 76 pages long.
The schedule is available online, and there’s a myriad of great things to choose from. As usual, it’s a bit of over-choice, but there’s sure to be something for all ages in your Charleston beach house. Here’s a link to the new Piccolo Festival schedule.
Piccolo runs concurrently with Spoleto, and this year it’s Friday, May 25th through Sunday, June 10th. The City of Charleston runs Piccolo through its Office of Cultural Affairs, located at 75 Calhoun Street, Suite 3800. It’s open Monday through Friday from 9:00 – 5:00.
