While the beach is obviously a main draw for many visitors to Isle of Palms, it’s not the be-all and end-all of entertainment on the isle. Golf enthusiasts can play an invigorating round of golf on the expansive 1,600-acre course at Wild Dunes, which is famous for its breathtaking beauty. You can also go fishing along Breach Inlet, charter a boat from Isle of Palms Marina, or go on a sightseeing cruise with Barrier Island Eco Tours. Close by the beach, Isle of Palms County Park also contains gorgeous park grounds with recreational activities like sand volleyball.
In between running around and exploring the area, grab a bite to eat at one of Isle of Palms’ delicious local restaurants. Long Island Café is a charming bistro that is known for their handmade pasta and fresh seafood, while Acme Lowcountry Kitchen serves up traditional Southern coastal cuisine in a laid-back, no-frills atmosphere. If you’re visiting Breach Inlet, stop by Boathouse for fresh seafood paired with an exquisite view. And if you happen to love literature or history, Poe’s Tavern is a novel experience. For drinks, you can’t go wrong with the Windjammer.
Because we’re located just thirty-nine minutes away from downtown Charleston, you can also take a day trip to enjoy the sights and sounds of one of South Carolina’s coolest cities! Take a scenic walking tour of downtown Charleston’s picturesque neighborhoods in places like the Battery for more insight into Charleston’s storied history.
Stop by old-fashioned homes and mansions, many of which are now museums open to the public. The Aiken-Rhett House Museum, the Nathaniel Russel House, and the former plantation of Drayton Hall, give visitors a glimpse of antebellum life in the South. Middleton Place is known for its extensive and immaculate gardens, while Magnolia Plantation and Gardens features more of a wild, untamable beauty to its grounds.
Charleston City Market, located in the historic district of the city, is also a lively place to visit. Pick up a souvenir, such as the beautiful woven baskets made by vendors in the traditional Gullah style of West Africa that has been passed down for generations.
Those interested in military history should check out Fort Sumter National Monument, where the first shot of the Civil War was fired in 1861, as well as the H.L. Hunley Submarine, which was the world’s first successful submarine.
You can enjoy a different perspective of Charleston from the water on a sightseeing cruise that takes you around the area to spots like the Battery, Castle Pinckney, Waterfront Park, Fort Sumter, and the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge. When you return to land, visit Waterfront Park for a leisurely stroll, or check out the intriguing South Carolina Aquarium’s myriad of exhibits.
When you’re craving a mouthwatering meal, head to renowned seafood restaurants like Pearlz Oyster Bar, Charleston Crab House, and Fleet Landing Restaurant & Bar. For Southern dishes, Poogan’s Porch, Slightly North of Broad Restaurant, and Lowcountry Bistro are delectable mid-priced options. Elite fine dining can be found at Husk, 82 Queen, Circa 1886, Peninsula Grill, Magnolias, and Halls Chophouse. Fresh, inexpensive options include Five Loaves Café and Butcher & Bee, while 39 Rue De Jean serves up both traditional French cuisine and inventive sushi.
