Spanish galleon

As I covered in that last BLOG, when you’re here in a Charleston beach house, be it one of our Isle of Palms vacation rentals or a Folly Beach house Charleston, it’s nice to do something ocean-related.

And due to the sheer amount of water present in the Lowcountry, it’s no surprise there’s a myriad of great options.

A new, unique and rather novel one is sailing into town today.  It’s…

El Galeón!  And it’s docking today in Charleston Harbor.

El Galeón is a grand, 170-foot replica of a 16th century Spanish galleon.

Galleons were large-masted sailing ships originally designed in Venice to fight against pirates.   Soon they spread throughout the Mediterranean, being embraced by Portugal and Spain because of their maneuverability and effectiveness.

Before long, every Atlantic sea power had galleons as a key part of their fleet, including the English.  It was the main ship on both sides of the famous 1588 battle against the Spanish Armada.

El Galeón will be docked at the Maritime Center, which is just south of the SC Aquarium and the Fort Sumter Museum at Liberty Square downtown.  The address is 10 Wharfside Street in Charleston, and it’s an easy drive from all our SC vacation rentals, both Isle of Palms luxury rentals and Folly Beach rentals Charleston.

The ship is manned by a crew of 22, who handle and maneuver the ship just as sailors would have in the 16th century.  El Galeón comes here all the way from Seville, Spain, where it’s owned and managed by the Nao Victoria Foundation.

El Galeón will be open for tours starting tomorrow, Wednesday, August 26th through Monday, August 31st from 10:00 a.m. till 6:00 p.m. each day.  It’s a family-friendly tour and appropriate for all ages staying in your luxury house on Isle of Palms or Folly.  Tickets for adults are $10, and $5 for kids ages 5 through 12.

And in more good news on the gas price front…

Following up on previous blogs about falling gas prices, including THIS BLOG, and THIS ONE

…It’s official.  According to the Associated Press, Charleston has the cheapest gas prices in the country among the markets surveyed.

The highest?  Los Angeles, at $1.57 per gallon higher than here.
