If you’re here in a beach house Charleston, you’ve probably noticed it has a really top-notch kitchen. Well, following’s something fun – and guilt-free — to cook up in your home-away-from-home.
Now that the holidays are over, many people look for healthier eating tips for the new year. Recently, on public television, an interesting documentary by Michael Pollan aired called, “In Defense of Food,” about the value of good food to your overall health and wellness.
Reporter David Wiegand of the San Francisco Chronicle summarized the message of the documentary this way:
“Eat food, not too much. Mostly plants.
Meat is healthy food, but our problem is that we eat too much of it.
So, you know, don’t.
Eat only foods that will eventually rot.
Avoid foods advertised on television.
Eat food that’s been cooked by humans.
If it’s made from a plant, eat it;
if it was made in a plant, don’t. “
That struck me as really profound yet very down-to-earth advice. (By the way, here’s more about the documentary: http://www.pbs.org/food/shows/in-defense-of-food/)
As great as things like Charleston Restaurant Week are, where you can eat out and sample all kinds of gourmet Charlestonian cuisine, the healthiest way to eat is to prepare food yourself… at home or in your Charleston beach house, be it one of our Isle of Palms vacation rentals or a Folly Beach house Charleston. And like I said, our luxury beach house rentals SC have some terrific kitchens which are just itchin’ to be put to good use.
So why not use it to bake up something beneficial for everyone in your luxury house on Isle of Palms?
We often hear about the benefit of vegan foods… and here is a link to a really interesting such recipe for Rosemary Chocolate Chip Cookies, complete with photos and a video. The combination of fresh rosemary and chocolate is an unusual and delicious one, and the recipe includes such healthful ingredients as coconut oil, almond milk and ground flax seeds:
Who says cookies are for the afternoon or evening only? Here’s another recipe which makes a great breakfast cookie, loaded with nutrients, fiber and healthy energy. Good-for-you ingredients include banana, pumpkin puree, almond butter, coconut oil, agave nectar, oatmeal, whole wheat flour, almond meal, pecans, cranberries and dark chocolate. What a wonderful treat to place out on the kitchen counter in one of our beach rentals Charleston, where everyone can grab one as they start their day. They are vegan and nearly gluten-free and are called Vegan Everything Breakfast Cookies…
By the way, here’s the author’s recipe for homemade almond butter, which looks really good: http://mylittlecelebration.com/roasted-salted-almond-butter-with-flaxseed/

While in a beach house Charleston, why not adopt a best friend? And get a great perk, too.
People who come to our SC vacation rentals often wonder about the best plantations to visit while here. Of course Boone Hall Plantation is the most convenient to our Isle of Palms luxury rentals, just over the IOP Connector. But as far as the beauty of the grounds themselves, Magnolia Plantation is hard to beat.
They have one of the top collections of camellias on the planet, and right now is a great time to see them.
And this month, they’re running a neat promotion. If you adopt a pet from the local animal shelters (Charleston Animal Society or Pet Helpers) during the month of January, you will automatically receive a coupon for a year-long family pass to Magnolia Plantation. The grounds are very pet-friendly, and it’s a perfect place to walk your new dog. Plus talk about a great souvenir from your stay in a beach house Charleston… a genuine Lowcountry pet!
