Late summer means baseball is still going on, and you can catch some great action on the diamond while you’re here staying in a beach house Charleston.
The Holy City has its own team, the RiverDogs, a Single-A Sally league team that’s (rather ironically) part of the Yankees. Here is a fun fact: the team is co-owned by none other than the Saturday Night Live alum and movie icon, Bill Murray, whose official title is, appropriately, “Director of Fun.”
As you might imagine, this isn’t just any team, ballpark, or milieu. The RiverDogs are known for their zany promotions as well as for their creative cuisine – no wonder, in a city that’s increasingly become known as a global foodie destination.
After all, watching America’s pastime is just a wholesome, very fun way to spend an afternoon or evening. It’s got something for everyone staying in your Charleston beach house, and is a fun outing to the peninsula when you’re here in one of our SC vacation rentals.
The RiverDogs play at “The Joe,” Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, named after Charleston’s beloved former mayor who served 40 years (!). It’s an easy drive to all our luxury beach house rentals SC, be they Isle of Palms vacation rentals or a Folly Beach house Charleston. If you’re in a luxury house on Isle of Palms, head to Highway 17 and take it all the way onto the peninsula and the Crosstown, and turn right onto Lockwood. If you’re in Folly Beach rentals Charleston, cross the Ashley onto the peninsula and turn onto Lockwood, then head left. You can’t miss it. It’s located over toward the Citadel.
Not long ago it was announced that they’ll be making the already cool ballpark even cooler, by adding a $3 million, 6,000 square foot club level. This announcement coincides with what will be the 20th anniversary of the Joe. It will be ready for banquets, weddings and special events beginning in February 2017, prior to the opening of baseball season. The RiverDogs’ promotions are really a hoot, and one of the funniest is happening tonight – quite appropriately on a Tuesday – August 23rd , when the RiverDogs will take on the Columbia Fireflies.
It’s “Bobbl’ection 2016 — Fans can also mark their calendars as the RiverDogs play host to the democratic process with the fourth rendition of the Bobbl’ection. Heading to the polls has never been more fun. Get to the gates early to “vote” for either the Democrat or Republican candidate. Five hundred bobbleheads will be available for both sides and the first group to run out will be declared the winner.”
In other words, they will have 500 bobbleheads each of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump available at the front gate. Fans will have a choice of either one. Dave Echols, GM and prez of the RiverDogs, explains it this way: “In effect, you come through the gate and you say, ‘I want Trump,’ or ‘I want Hillary,’ and we give it to you. Then, the first (bobblehead) that (runs) out is declared the winner.”
They have been doing this promotion ever since 2004, so this will be the fourth installment.
And get this — the fans at the Joe have never been wrong in predicting the presidential winner.
There is a new wrinkle in this year’s Bobbl’ection, though. For the first time ever, there will be a third option. If you don’t want either bobblehead, you can opt instead for a raffle ticket and a chance to win the grand prize – a free airlines voucher for a plane ticket. As Echols puts it, “So if you don’t want to make America great again or you don’t quite believe the emails scandal, you can choose to get a one-way flight out of the country.”
