If you’re looking for something fun for kids to do - or folks of any age, for that matter - you might want to check out SCDNR’s virtual summer camp program. It’s a great way to learn more about nature, from the safety and comfort of home. Because of the COVID crisis, many camps have cancelled or severely curtailed their planned activities for the summer. In-person group activities are frowned upon since it’s hard to maintain the recommended social distancing. Thus, as is the case with many entities (like museums, zoos, concerts, live music and such), virtual alternatives have sprung up in their place. SCDNR, the acronym for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, has put together a fun virtual summer camp program tailored around marine life. It’s going on now through the end of July. Virtual summer camp classes takes place each Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. They might be virtual, but they are definitely interactive! They’re organized and led by members of the marine education team. Here’s what each class will look like. First, they kick off with a short discussion about that particular week's topic. Then, team members will lead you in a hands-on activity using simple craft supplies you likely have at home. During the course of the class, feel free to ask questions live!

June 16th: Horseshoe Crabs - Paper plate Horseshoe crabs 23rd: Discover Fish - Burrfish art 30th: What is an Estuary? - Edible estuary July 7th: Super Squid - Dissection and squid propulsion experiment 14th: Shark Senses - How to sense like a shark 21st: Diamondback Terrapins - Design a terrapin 28th: Shorebirds - Build a shorebird Just click on the title to register for any or all of the ones you’re interested in. When you do, you’ll get a confirmation email that will include detailed instructions and a full list of any supplies you’ll need to gather before your virtual summer camp class. Supplies are just suggestions. Members of the marine education team will be glad to help choose alternatives if need be. Programs start each Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. You can access recordings after they air live. Your kids can take part in these classes from home, or from one of our Isle of Palms vacation rentals. It’s a great way to learn more about the natural world and aquatic life you’ll see firsthand here in the Lowcountry.
