Harvest Festival near our beach rentals Charleston

As I’ve covered many a time, the Lowcountry is brimming over with festivals.

Now that we’re in the autumnal season, it’s only fitting to celebrate the harvest.  This Saturday, November 4th is the 16th annual Harvest Festival, taking place at the Johns Island County Park.

Here are the details:

  • Live bluegrass music by Boss Hawg, Marshgrass Mamas, Yeehaw Junction, Southern Flavor Bluegrass and Blue Plantation;
  • Real southern BBQ, kettle corn, boiled peanuts and plenty of other festival faves;
  • Farmers market;
  • Arts and crafts vendors;
  • Kids’ activities like hay rides, pumpkin decorating and stick pony rides;
  • Youth archery turkey shoot for ages 8-17 to win a free frozen turkey;
  • Overnight camping and trail riding for horse people at Mullet Hall Equestrian Center.

The fun will go on from 11:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m.  Admission is $8 for adults, free for kids 12 and under.  For your GPS, it’s located at 2662 Mullet Hall Road on Johns Island, a scenic drive from all our luxury beach house rentals SC.  Read more here.

mac and cheese

It’s a Major Mac-Off near our luxury beach house rentals SC

Now that the weather is turning toward the fallish, it’s nice to start thinking about cooking some autumnal foods. Think squash, sweet potato or pumpkin spice anything, tailgate chili, harvest vegetable soup, holiday casseroles.  And such a list is not complete without what is arguably the king of all comfort foods, mac ‘n’ cheese.

Mac ‘n’ cheese is one of those versatile dishes that appeals to all ages and is particularly kid-friendly.  Chances are, if you’re spending a week in a Charleston beach house with kids, you’ll probably make it at least once.  We are in the South, after all.

While making it from the good ol’ blue box works well in a pinch, more and more people/chefs are getting gourmet with it.  If you happen to be headed to one of our SC vacation rentals this weekend, either a luxury house on Isle of Palms or a Folly Beach house Charleston, you can see (and taste) how the pros do it.

It’s the eighth annual Charleston Mac-Off, and prepare to come hungry.  About 20 restaurants will be duking it out for the title, and you’ll get to sample their best shot.

It’s one of the biggest mac & cheese festivals in the country.

FYI  –  CRAVE Kitchen & Cocktails in Mount Pleasant is the stuff of legend.  They’ve won the festival’s title for best overall several times now.  They then went on to win Esquire Magazine’s poll for best mac & cheese in America.  They won with an unbelievable and unprecedented 85% of the vote.

The magazine officially dubbed their dish the “Most Life-Changing Mac ‘n’ Cheese in America.”

CRAVE is located just over the Connector from all our Isle of Palms vacation rentals.

Restaurants competing this year include these, not far from our luxury beach house rentals SC

  • Mac Daddy
  • Bubba Gump Shrimp Company
  • The Loophole
  • Coleman Public House
  • The Shelter
  • Osprey Point Cherrywood BBQ & Ale House
  • Tavern & Table
  • Healthy Home Foods
  • Just Stuff It Catering
  • Fratellos Italian Tavern
  • Roti Rolls
  • Smoke BBQ
  • Kingdom
  • Urban Cookhouse
  • Nacha Mama’s Taqueria
  • Semilla

You can vote for your favorite, to determine the winner of the People’s Choice Award.  There will also be a panel of local celebrity judges who will determine the Critic’s Choice Award.  Then there’s the Home Grown Cooks competition among serious home cooks, which just might be the most cutthroat of all.

It’s quite a wing ding, with thousands attending.  Last year, visitors ate more than 4125 pounds of mac ‘n’ cheese.

There’ll be live music by One Kool Blow (soul and R&B) and Ben Fagan & The Holy City Hooligans (“feel-good island soul”).  The Mac Kitchen will have demos and free activities.   , not to mention a mac ‘n’ cheese eating contest sponsored by Charleston Artisan Cheese House, and a bunch of other stuff like arts/crafts/food/spice vendors, and fun stuff for the kids.
