Historic Charleston Walking Tour

As one of the oldest cities in the entire nation, Charleston, or the “Holy City,” is well-known for its deep and storied history. From its Colonial beginnings and antebellum plantations to its decadent Gilded Age mansions, Charleston has much to offer for those interested in the rich history of this Southern cultural hub—particularly if you decide to spend some time walking around on its historic city streets, where driving and carriage tours often can’t reach.

Whether you decide to go on a self-guided tour or to use a tour guide service like Charleston History Tours, there are a variety of Historic Charleston walking tours.

Charleston History Tours provides a daily public two-hour long walking tour of unique Charleston landmarks like Rainbow Row, Dock Street Theatre, the Old Slave mart Museum, the French Quarter, St. Michael’s Church, Fort Sumter (viewed from a distance), High Battery and Harbor, and a myriad of other landmarks, churches, and antebellum homes and gardens along the way. Bulldog Tours also offers public tours of the same landmarks on a daily basis.

Both tour guide services have daily tours departing at 10:00am and 2:00pm, though on Sundays, Charleston walking Tours only runs a 2:00pm tour. Additionally, both companies charge $10.00 per child age twelve and under and $25.00 per adult. Bulldog Tours does not charge for children under the age of seven.

Finally, both Charleston History Tours and Bull Dog Tours offer private walking tours of historic Charleston as well. Private walking tours through Charleston History Tours can be customized according to what landmarks and spots tour-goers are most interested in seeing, and can be given any time between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm daily. Tour departures can be arranged from any hotel or restaurant in the historic district.

Prices for private walking tours through Charleston History Tours begin at $200.00 for six or less guests and $300.00 for seven or more guests. A $100.00 non-refundable deposit is also required if you’re interested in a specific date and time, with the remaining balance due twenty-four hours prior to the tour.
