Heading to one of our Isle of Palms vacation rentals is an excellent idea, any season of the year.
Right now we are smack dab in the middle of Spoleto (and Piccolo Spoleto), and the city is filled with the sounds and sights of great artistry. Many of the major performances take place at the renovated Gaillard Center downtown, a relatively “new” professional entertainment space.
It opened in October 2015, experienced its first Spoleto last year with the epic staging of Porgy and Bess, and it’s been hosting top-notch performances from the start.
Last week the house rocked with the gorgeous sounds of the full Spoleto Orchestra and Westminster Choir performing a great array of music in the Spoleto Celebration Concert. There were pieces by Leonard Bernstein (Candide and West Side Story), Mozart, Vivaldi, Puccini, and Charlestonians Edmund Jenkins and Fud Livingston.
Here’s a fun fact – Fud, one of the most prolific composers/arrangers/musicians of the early Jazz era is the great uncle of current Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg. John gave a wonderful talk last week as part of Spoleto, covering much of the amazing story of his Uncle Fud.
Just today we watched the dress rehearsal by the Orchestra, Choir and Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus of Mozart’s Great Mass, along with beautiful compositions by Ralph Vaughn Williams. The acoustics in the Gaillard are truly spectacular. The show opens tonight in the Gaillard.
Of course, Spoleto is a terrific time to come to one of our rental homes South Carolina, either Isle of Palms vacation rentals or a Folly Beach house Charleston. A Charleston beach house makes an ideal home base for a Spoleto and/or Piccolo Spoleto experience. Enjoy the arts and culture of the festival while also enjoying a beach vacation in your luxury house on Isle of Palms.
The Gaillard’s got it going on, whatever the season
But great performances aren’t limited to Spoleto time of late May and early June. The Gaillard Center just announced their upcoming performance schedule for the 2017-18 season. As usual they are hosting some top-shelf entertainment.
It’s is a real jewel for Charleston, with its Martha and John M. Rivers Performance Hall.
The Gaillard Center is actually a nonprofit dedicated to the cultural enrichment of the Charleston area. To this end, they are offering a wonderful program. They bring approximately 30,000 area school children from area schools in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester Counties. The goal is to allow them to see a live theater performance during the coming year.
The Gaillard explains it this way:

Experiences and educational opportunities rich in the arts are a key part of learning. As the Gaillard Center is a non-profit, your support is critical to the success of the exciting artistic and educational programs and performers that help to create the Gaillard Experience.
Your continued support will change the lives of the Lowcountry’s children and delight audiences of all ages.
