If you’re in one of our luxury beach house rentals SC, the reasons to celebrate just keep comin’ down the pike.

Last Friday it was National Doughnut Day, as I covered in this BLOG.  Today  –  it’s time to fête another beloved all-American treat.

Happy National Tea Day!  June 10th is officially designated as such.

While it might not be one of the better known of national occasions, the folks in the nearby town of Summerville have found a really HUGE way of celebrating it.

They are brewing one GIGANTIC cup of iced tea in an attempt to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records  —  yet again.

If you are staying in one of our SC vacation rentals, be it a luxury house on Isle of Palms or a Folly Beach house Charleston, chances are some sweet tea will be in your fridge.  This is the South, after all, and sweet tea and the beach just seem to go together.

If you don’t feel like brewing it up yourself, just head on up I-26 from your Charleston beach house and take part in the Summerville fun.  It’s an easy drive inland from all our luxury beach house rentals SC, both Isle of Palms vacation rentals and Folly Beach house rentals Charleston SC.  Don’t worry about them running out… they’re making a couple thousand gallons of the stuff.

If you are an annual visitor to our luxury beach house rentals SC, you may recall they did this last year.   The whole thing’s developed into quite a drama  –  call it a sweet tea throwdown, if you will.

The previous word record had been 1,140 gallons of sweet tea made by a Chick-fil-A in Oklahoma back in 2010.  Alas, in that instance, they threw it away instead of allowing people to drink it.

Summerville had a better idea.  Last year’s event boasted:

  • A 10-foot custom container that looks like a giant blue Solo cup, made by Scout Boats – and it’s nicknamed, “Mason;”
  • From-scratch brewing of 1,425 gallons of sweet tea;
  • Brewed from 120 pounds of local tea leaves from The Charleston Tea Plantation –  the only tea plantation in North America;
  • Cooled down with: 3,000 pounds of ice;
  • Sweetened with: 2,100 pounds of Dixie Crystals sugar;
  • For just $5.00 you got a special souvenir Mason jar that allowed you to drink all the tea you want.

They won the world record, but it didn’t last long.

In October of last year, tea behemoth Lipton came to the Lowcountry, put on a big “Be More Tea” music festival at North Charleston’s Riverfront Park, and broke the world record.  SNAP!  And in Summerville’s neck of the woods, to boot!!

Well the Town of Summerville, which claims to be the birthplace of sweet tea, is undaunted and raring to get back the record TODAY.  This time they are planning to make 2,400 gallons using 210 pounds of LOCAL Charleston Tea Plantation tea.

Take that, Lipton!

The brewing starts in the morning at 7:00 a.m., followed by mixing in the sugar and concentrate at 11:30.   The Guinness judging and ceremony will take place at 3:00… then the real party starts later  –  a giant RECORD SMASHING TEA PARTY, if you will  –  from 5:00 till 8:00 p.m., in front of Town Hall.  Like last year, there will be lots of live music (by The Midnight City), dancing in the street, and food and goodies available for purchase… no doubt many of them on the tea theme.

The party happens at 200 S. Main Street in Summerville.

By the way, the charming town also has what’s known as a “Sweet Tea Trail” of all things tea related.  Here’s a link to more on their website:   http://visitsummerville.com/sweet-tea-trail/

Spoleto and Piccolo finales near our luxury beach house rentals SC…

Well, we’re coming up on the final weekend of Spoleto and Piccolo Spoleto.  Each year this festival seems to fly by with its whirlwind of cultural events.

The mainline Spoleto festival finale will take place at Middleton Plantation, west of the Ashley, this coming Sunday.   It’s an all-day affair (well, gates open at 3:30) that will feature terrific music by The High Divers, Jordan Igoe, SUSTO, then headliner Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats…. a Beer Garden, picnicking and the traditional fireworks display afterwards.  Tickets are required, and FYI this is a very popular event.

Happening tomorrow night (Saturday June 11th) is the Piccolo Finale.  This is a great free event downtown that’ll have excellent music in a family-friendly setting.  There will be food and drinks available for purchase, and there are plenty of booths to check out.  It’ll go on from 5:00 p.m. till 10:00 p.m. and would be perfect for everyone staying in your Charleston beach house.

Music will be provided by:

  • The Very Hypnotic Soul Band with Benjamin Starr and McKenzie Eddy;
  • The Travelin’ Kine (the local alt. country/red dirt/Americana roots rock band);
  • Headliner: Earth, Wind & Fire 10-piece tribute band led by Michael Quinn, sure to get everyone dancing.

It’ll take place near the lake in the beautiful Hampton Park downtown, north of the Crosstown and near the Citadel.  If you’re using a GPS, it’s 30 Mary Murray Boulevard in Charleston.  It’s also a convenient drive from all our luxury beach house rentals SC.  Here’s the scoop:  http://www.piccolospoleto.com/piccolo-spoleto-finale/
