The Isle of Palms Rec Center will soon become the new home of the IOP Farmers’ Market.
Farmers’ markets are a big deal in the world in general, and in the Lowcountry in particular. There are many to choose from, as I’ve blogged about before. There’s a great one Tuesdays on Coleman Boulevard in Mount Pleasant.
Then of course there’s the biggie downtown. The Charleston Farmers’ Market in Marion Square has been named one of the top ten in the United States.
Well, the islands have also joined the movement. Sullivan’s Island has a farmers’ market that takes place in early summer. The Isle of Palms started one a couple years ago, dovetailing with Sullivan’s by happening in the late summer/early fall.
What’s New This Year with the IOP Farmers’ Market?
The IOP Farmers’ Market is about to crank up again for the new season, and they’ve made an important change. It used to take place in the large grassy field at the IOP County Park near the beach. While there was ample space and parking, it was a super sunny (read: hot) place, and not the best to encourage ambling through at a leisurely pace. I understand it was also pretty tough on the vendors.
Word to the wise: the best farmers markets take place in an area with some shade, e.g. under the shelter of trees.
Well, the IOP powers-that-be have listened to suggestions and feedback, and they’re making a beneficial tweak this year. For the first time, the IOP Farmers’ Market will be held at the Rec Center.
It will take place every Wednesday, 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., from September 4th through October 30th, 2019, near the baseball fields at 27th Avenue. There is plenty of free parking nearby.
The IOP Rec Center is a little treasure, conveniently located in the middle of the island, off 28th Avenue. It has a plethora of activities all year round. It’s cool to note these activities are not just for residents but for visitors as well.
