Where every adoption is a touchdown!

It’s Super Bowl season, and the Charleston Animal Society and Mount Pleasant Towne Centre are teaming up to bring some seriously cute gridiron action on a Saturday afternoon. Not only is it a lot of fun to watch, with all the proceeds going to the animal shelter, but here’s an awesome fringe benefit  -  a whole lot of pups will get new homes.

Their tagline: “Where every adoption is a touchdown!”

It’s inspired by the brilliant show cooked up by Animal Planet a couple decades ago -  Puppy Bowl (and eventually Kitten Bowl).  They came up with the idea of having two teams of adorable rescue pups  -  Team Fluff and Team Ruff  -  playing against each other and with chew toys on some Astroturf.  Basically, they romp around and play like the cute puppies they are.  Referees call penalties when needed to keep the peace.  Then, if a puppy has a toy and manages to cross the goal line, pandemonium ensues.  Cheerleaders like hedgehogs, silkie chickens, penguins, and even pot-bellied pigs go wild.  It’s the best.  And here's the kicker  -  since its inception, 100% of the “players” have been adopted into loving homes.

Our own local version  -  Pup Bowl VIII  -   will take place from noon till 3:00 on Saturday, February 8th at The Oaks in Mount Pleasant Towne Centre (aka the park across from Barnes & Noble).

Watch two teams of pups face off (in 2024, it was the Kansas City Canines take on the San Francisco FluffyWhiners).  The “game” will be emceed by Silvana Bravo, with music and more by DJ Luigi of Latin Groove Entertainment.  There will be a halftime show with live music.  Admission is $10 per person, and kids 12 & under are free.  100% of the proceeds go to the Charleston Animal Society.  Kickoff is at 12:30.

There will be a party atmosphere, with bounce house, face painting, glitter tattoos and balloon animals for the kids; plus food and drink vendors including  Zimos Gyros, Taternator, Delights Desserts & Coffee, and Burtons Grill with beer & wine.

Here are the official rules, from the website:

  • Potential adopters must visit the CAS Registration Table prior to kickoff to receive a registration number.
    • Potential adopters wishing to register AFTER kickoff time MAY be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
    • Adoptions will be decided by random drawing.
    • If your number is selected, you may choose a remaining pup from that quarter only. In the event you do not want a pup from that quarter, your number will be placed back into the drawing.
    • Intermission: Once all pups in the quarter have been selected for adoption, spectators may give a donation to come on the field, as space allows, for no longer than 5 minutes each turn.
