As the holiday season nears, we start to get excited about the weather that is cooling down, the opportunity to eat holiday goodies and worry about the calories later, and the Parade of Boats held in Charleston every year, celebrating all that is wonderful about this time of year! Held on the evening of December 9th, the parade of festively decorated boats traveling along the Charleston Harbor offers a unique spin to the traditional Christmas parade. No animals, no marching bands, just boat after boat, each more festive than the last, and all hoping to win the coveted best decoration prizes.
The theme is Deck the Halls and the captains of the vessels work hard to make sure their “ladies of the sea” are the prettiest on the harbor—perhaps even the prettiest in all of South Carolina! The parade starts at 5 p.m. on the Mt. Pleasant side of the harbor and continues until 8 p.m., parading under a sky exploding with fireworks. The fireworks extravaganza is scheduled to begin at 6:45 p.m. making the finale even more colorful.
As each boat floats quietly by the different viewing areas, the crowds can cheer and applaud their favorites. The night air gets chilly this time of year, so dress accordingly. No one minds the chill though; it’s one of our favorite things about this time of year!
