There are many ways to get to your Charleston beach house.  As I blogged about last time, gas prices near SC vacation rentals are the lowest in the entire country, so driving is a good option.

So is flying into Charleston International Airport, also known as CHS.   The airport, the largest in South Carolina, is coming off the heels of a massive $200 million renovation and expansion.  The project took four years from start to finish.

Flying to your Charleston beach house, whether it’s a Folly Beach house Charleston or one of our Isle of Palms vacation rentals, is now more pleasant than ever.

Improvements included the following:

  • New rental car pavilion;
  • Consolidated and improved security checkpoint;
  • The addition of a third baggage carousel;
  • New central energy plant;
  • An expansion from 10 to 15 airline gates;
  • New atrium with giant light-filled dome;
  • New boarding bridges;
  • Updated baggage carousels;
  • New baggage handling system;
  • New shopping and dining venues, many with local roots (like Caviar & Bananas);
  • Two-story windows in the front and back to let natural light flood in;
  • New materials like sleek light-colored tile.

An award-winning way to get (jet) to your Charleston beach house…

Recently, the airport renovation received an award from its peers.  It won the best Commercial Service Airport – Architectural Project, bestowed by the American Association of Airport Executives, Southeast Chapter.

Paul Campbell, executive director and CEO of Charleston County Aviation Authority, had this to say:  “This award is a testament to the hundreds of people who worked on what is a total transformation of Charleston International Airport, from the architects and designers to the construction crews to the Aviation Authority staff that oversaw the day-to-day planning and progress.”

Speaking of which, here’s whom to thank…

Architect:  Fentress Architects of Colorado,

Project Manager:  Mead & Hunt

Builder: Austin Commercial LP of Dallas and local partner Hitt Contracting Inc.

Work will begin in the fall on a second parking deck as well as road realignment to streamline arrival and departure traffic.
