If you’re in a luxury house on Isle of Palms right now, or a Folly beach house Charleston, you picked a good weekend to be here.
First off, President’s Day is coming up this Monday, so it’s technically a holiday weekend. Rather appropriately, the President of the United States paid the Lowcountry a visit today. Yes, Air Force One landed here in Charleston, and the President made a big appearance at the huge Boeing campus near the airport, along with other dignitaries. They witnessed the unveiling of the new Dreamliner 787-10, a state-of-the-art new aircraft which will be produced exclusively here in Charleston. Pretty exciting stuff.
A luxury house on Isle of Palms: Great SEWE home base
Also this weekend, one of the biggest and most fun festivals is upon us. It’s the 35th annual Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. Although festivals take place all across the whole calendar nowadays, SEWE has traditionally been seen as the kickoff to festival season here in the Lowcountry. It’s expected to draw between 35,000 and 45,000 to the Charleston area.
So if you are here this weekend staying in one of our Isle of Palms luxury rentals, you are one smart cookie. There’s no shortage of cool things to do, indoors and out… and the weather looks great for the weekend.
If you’re not in one of our beach rentals Charleston right now, you ought to check out their website. And while you’re at it, you might want to seriously consider booking a Charleston beach house during the 36th annual SEWE in 2018. It will take place February 16-18, 2018.
SEWE hosts some of the very best wildlife artists in the world, working in all different media (oil, watercolor, bronzes, woodcarving, ceramics, you name it). The level of craftsmanship and artistry is truly astounding, and collectors are drawn here to build their collections. The realism, drama and beauty of nature in all its wildness are captured and displayed. Even if you’re not in the mood to drop a few thousand (or tens of thousands) on a piece, it’s a treat to check them out before they enter private collections. Charleston Place downtown is the best place to see some of the finest exhibitors.
One exciting thing about this year’s festival is, it’s back at the Gaillard after the venue’s being out of commission due to extensive renovations. This will be the second annual event that’s taken place in the city’s gorgeous new arts center. They’ll be using the main performance hall as well as event space for exhibitors with their handcrafted furniture, woodworking, leather goods, knives and outfitter goodies. It’s also the site of appearances by famed Animal Planet host, nature conservationist and wildlife biologist Jeff Corwin.
As usual, there are also exhibitors and demos at Marion Square (Birds of Prey! Yay) Charleston Visitors’ Center (site of tonight’s Ducks Unlimited’s Oyster Roast), as well as Charleston Place and various other venues around town. And don’t forget one of the main draws, the beloved Dock Dogs which will be catching some serious air down at Brittlebank Park. SEWE venues are convenient to all our SC vacation rentals, be they Isle of Palms vacation rentals or a Folly Beach house rentals Charleston SC.
SEWE’s going on today, Friday, February 17th, through Sunday, February 19th. Here’s a full schedule of events: http://sewe.com/events
Another fun thing right near your luxury house on Isle of Palms…
If you’ve been in the Lowcountry on New Year’s Day, you may have witnessed the annual Polar Bear Plunge on Sullivan’s Island, just over the Breach Inlet Bridge from your luxury house on Isle of Palms.
Thousands of folks run into the Atlantic, many wearing kooky costumes. (I’ll never forget the two skinny, pale pink shivering guys clothed only in turtle shells duct-taped front and back over certain crucial parts, running back to Dunleavy’s after the plunge).
Good news is, they raise a ton of money for the Special Olympics and have been doing so for years. Sponsored by the Law Enforcement Torch Run, such events take place all over the country, where they encourage folks to run or jump into nearby bodies of water… even northern inland lakes.
If you’re here right now in a luxury house on Isle of Palms, there’s another plunge happening this weekend, right on the island. It’s the Special Olympics Polar Plunge at Front Beach. Party central is The Windjammer, 1008 Ocean Boulevard.
IOP Polar Plunge details…
The party starts at 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning, with live registration. The plunge itself occurs about noon. There’s a minimum donation of $50 to join in, which also gets you an official t-shirt, tickets for libations and food and chances at door prizes. Spectators are also welcome, and there will be plenty of food and games for all. You can enter as an individual or as a team. The party will last till about 3:00.
This is a great chance to have fun for a good cause. The Special Olympics South Carolina receives no federal funding, so they rely on events like these to make ends meet.
