If you’re in a luxury house on Isle of Palms this week, here’s a word to the wise: “Wobble before you Gobble this Thanksgiving!”
It seems only fitting that the holiday best known for feasting would also be the perfect day for a 5K. Nothing like a brisk run or walk to counteract all that holiday food guilt.
Sure enough, Thanksgiving Day is now the number one day in America for running events. “Turkey trots” are a phenomenon that’s been picking up steam in recent years. In 2008 there were 290 Thanksgiving Day races across the country. In 2012, there were a whopping 490 of them.
What is the second most popular holiday for running? — Fourth of July. And the third: New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day.
USA Today had an interesting take on the Thanksgiving Day/running phenomenon here: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2015/11/22/turkey-trot-explained/75912818/
They also shared this interesting tidbit: the average American consumes 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving Day – the equivalent of 15 Dairy Queen small hot fudge sundaes. Yikes! (for your holiday reading pleasure – http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2015/11/04/thanksgiving-dinner-calories-food/75098420/)

Get set for the TDR&GW5K near your luxury house on Isle of Palms…
Thursday morning is the Turkey Day Run and Gobble Wobble 5K. The Gobble Wobble is for those who’d prefer a walk to a run.
The race is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and has a history that dates back almost 100 years. It has been run in various venues and formats (including relay and high school track team competition), and at one point even ran from Charleston to Summerville. Now it is a true 3.1 mile/5K run and walk, and this is officially the 39th one in a row.
It is popular, indeed. Attracting over 7,500 registrants from all over North America, it’s second in size only to the Cooper River Bridge Run. In fact, it’s been ranked the 28th largest 5K in the United States and is a U. S. Track & Field certified event.
The course itself is ideal for seeing the sights as it travels down and back up the historic spine of the peninsula. It starts at Marion Square, travels down Meeting Street to the Battery, past White Point Gardens, down Murray Boulevard, then back up King Street to Marion Square.
Online registration is no longer available, but you can register tomorrow (Wednesday, Nov. 23rd) in person and pick up race packets from 8:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., or Thursday morning from 7:00 a.m. till 8:30. Registration/packet pickup are set up in their Expo tent near the Embassy Suites at Marion Square downtown, a convenient drive from all our SC vacation rentals, both Folly Beach house rentals Charleston SC and Isle of Palms vacation rentals.
The run kicks off promptly at 9:00 Thursday morning. There are also shorter length runs for the kids starting at 10:00 a.m. So there’s plenty of time to get in some good exercise and sightseeing before you head back to your luxury house on Isle of Palms in time for the big meal – sans guilt.
Before you do cross back over the bridge, check out the post-race party with free food and beverages (beer for those 21 and over), live music and the awards ceremony.
In a change since last year, strollers are no longer allowed on the course. And, as always, neither are dogs.
As is the case with many of these turkey trots, proceeds go to charity, so you can feel good about participating in more ways than one. Last year, proceeds went to more than 30 different charities, including the following:
- Daughters of St. Paul
- Boy Scout Troop 79
- Magdalene House
- Alzheimer Association
- Charleston Catholic School
- Hospice of Charleston Foundation
- MUSC Children’s Hospital
- Coastal Carolina BSA
- Lowcountry Food Bank
- Our Lady of Mercy Outreach
- St. Vincent de Paul Society
- Neighborhood House
- One Eighty Place
- His Way Ministry
- Cliff’s Cause
- Charleston EMS
- Project Hope
