Charleston City Market
Located in the heart of downtown Charleston at 188 Meeting St, Charleston, SC 29401, the City Market is much more than a place to shop for souvenirs, although it is good for that as well. Established in 1804, the historic Charleston City Market was initially the main spot for residents to buy food, and then it developed into a hub for socializing in addition to shopping. It became such an important part of the South Carolina lifestyle that it was eventually listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Market Hall and Sheds building was recognized as a National Historic Landmark. Today, the Charleston City Market still plays a large role in the Lowcountry region, but caters more to tourists as a popular attraction.
What to Expect When You Visit City Market
The City Market is comprised of a day market, which is open daily, and a night market, which opens on Friday and Saturday evenings. There are more than 300 vendors selling their wares over four city blocks. There are stalls upon stalls showcasing almost anything you can imagine needing or wanting. From toys and clothes to souvenir knick-knacks and household items, there isn’t much you won’t be able to find here. For a real Lowcountry keepsake, head over to the vendors offering hand-woven sweetgrass baskets made locally from grass right out of the area’s own coastal marshes. If you prefer to spend your money on products that are 100% locally made, just keep an eye out for the green and cream certified authentic seal that identifies certain vendors and their items.
There are a number of restaurants in surrounding the historic Charleston City Market, so you can take a break from shopping to grab a bite to eat any time. Additional specialty stores line the nearby streets as well, and there are walking and carriage tours available outside ready to fill you in on even more Charleston history.
