A Rich Cultural Event in Charleston
The MOJA Arts Festival first began as the Charleston Black Arts Festival in 1979, which celebrated black artists and performers from the Lowcountry's modern arts scene, changing its name to MOJA Arts Festival a few years later in 1984. Since then, MOJA Arts Festival has remained an annual celebration held from late September through early October, taking place over the course of a week and a half beginning on the last Thursday of September and ending on the first Sunday of October. During this time, visitors can attend the festival and nearly half of its events for free, with other events charging a nominal admission fee. Featured events during the festival cover a variety of artistic disciplines, including dance, visual arts, storytelling, traditional crafts, ethnic cuisine, poetry, theater, and a wide range of music-from classical and gospel to jazz and R&B. For visitors traveling with children, there are also tons of activities for kids!
