Gaillard facade

Happening TONIGHT, Friday October 9th, is the dedication and open house of the newly finished and downright magnificent Charleston Gaillard Center  –  the main performing arts venue downtown.  It’s undergone a massive $142 million renovation that has transformed it into a truly world-class venue.  It’s the most expensive municipal project in the history of Charleston, made possible by a unique public-private partnership.  The center includes a performance hall, exhibition hall, ballroom and city offices.  It will be a venue for concerts and performances of all kinds, conferences, wedding receptions, reunions, banquets and educational programs for decades to come.

The dedication ceremony happens at 5:30 p.m. and the open house follows, lasting until 7:30 p.m.  It’s free and open to the public.  It’s a great chance to see the venue up close before it’s filled with performances (and their schedule is brimming with great events.  First up – world famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma performs with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra).   The Gaillard’s located at 2 George Street in downtown Charleston, convenient to all our SC vacation rentals.

King Street is on a roll, having been named one of America’s ten GREATEST STREETS.

The College of Urban Studies at The College of Charleston compiled a list of the main things that contribute toward King being so great.  According to their analysis, King Street:

  1. is a human scaled street;
  2. invites pedestrians;
  3. exhibits natural smart growth;
  4. blends seamlessly into its surroundings;
  5. reminds us of our past, with an eye to the future;
  6. has energy;
  7. fosters an agglomeration of economies.

This coming Sunday is the next installment of Second Sundays on King, which is one of the best recurring local events around.  The street is blocked off to all vehicular traffic from Calhoun Street south for several blocks.  Pedestrians, dogs, musicians, booths, and cafes take over and make for a great afternoon in the city.

This time, the Charleston Animal Society will be there selling their smokin’ hot firefighter calendars, which just recently DEBUTED.  Keep an eye peeled for some of the firefighter/models to personally sign yours.  All proceeds go to Toby’s Fund, a very worthy cause which helps injured and abused animals.

There are several other special events going on, including a trunk show at Copper Penny and many pink things (it is breast cancer awareness month, after all). Here’s a link to some more of what’s going on this Sunday:

King Street is an easy drive from all our SC vacation rentals, whether you’re staying in a luxury house on Isle of Palms or a Folly Beach house Charleston.  If you are driving downtown from our Isle of Palms vacation rentals or any of our beach rentals Charleston, parking downtown can be a bit of a challenge.

One good option is to park in one of several parking garages run by the city.  These allow you to park in the shade (unless you are on the top level).  As a nice bonus, the city offers two hours of free parking in most of their garages during Second Sundays with a voucher.  Here’s a link to print a voucher:  (If you’re in a Charleston beach house and don’t have access to a printer, they usually have them available to pick up at Second Sunday information booths, while supplies last).

Big book sale

Also going on all this weekend is the annual “That Big Book Sale,” sponsored by the good folks at Charleston Friends of the Library.  It’s a chance to score great deals on reading materials for all ages in your Charleston beach house.  See above poster for dates and times.  Prices start at just $0.50 for children’s books and $1 for adult fiction and non-fiction. There will be racks of media available, as well. Here’s a map of the Omar Shrine Auditorium in Mount Pleasant, where the event takes place:”/176+Patriots+Point+Rd,+Mt+Pleasant,+SC+29464/@32.7974724,-79.902378,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m8!4m7!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x88fe708c585674f3:0xfb087b10f416a8c4!2m2!1d-79.9001893!2d32.7974724
