taste of folly (2013)

Come get a Taste of Folly, near our beach house rentals Charleston SC

Folly Beach has no shortage of funky festivals, such as Follypalooza in October, the Sea & Sand Festival in September, Folly Gras in February.  Oh, and of course how could we forget the recent Flip Flop Drop on New Year’s Eve, and the Bill Murray Look-A-Like Polar Plunge on New Year’s Day.

Well, this weekend they’re at it again with their annual Taste of Folly, where you can sample some of the best food and beverages Folly establishments have to offer.

These “Taste of…” festivals have become a reliably fun way to experience local cuisine in towns and cities across America.

It actually kicks off this evening with a high-powered cocktail competition, where your favorite Folly bartenders compete to make the best concoction in the BARTENDER MIX-OFF.  It’s hosted by Cannon Distillery in Avondale, whose vodkas will form the basis of the concoctions.  Admission is $20 advance or $25 at the door, which includes 5 ounce tastings of each entry.  The event is from 7:00 till 10:00 p.m. and takes place in the ballroom of the Tides Hotel at the very base of Center Street.

Then tomorrow (Saturday, January 20h) is the main event, the Taste of Folly Street Festival.  They’ll be blocking off a large chunk of Center Street from 10:00 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. so restaurants and bars can take over and strut their stuff.

Get set for:

  • Food and drinks specialties from over 50 local Folly favorites;
  • Local artists and vendors;
  • Good Clean Fun hosting a Kids’ Kitchen, with Pots & Pans Percussion, Soapy Sudsy Kitchen, pasta-making and plate-spinning;
  • Bert’s Hot Dog Eating Contest;
  • Crosby’s Fish & Shrimp Co. Oyster Shucking Contest;
  • Chili Cookoff at the Washout;
  • the Server-lympics
  • Date auction
  • Large silent auction
  • Live music by more than a dozen acts over four stages. They include Whit’s End, The Shakin’ Martinis, Dave Grunstra, Two 3 Ways, Deadwin, Ashes of Old Ways, Bobby Sutton, Thomas Champagne, Toni Manos, Teresa “Sweet T” Parrish, Waltzing Matilda, Sunflowers & Sin, and Jeff Houts.

This’ll be especially fun and convenient for anyone staying in Folly Beach rentals Charleston.

A $25 season pass covers entry to Taste of Folly, Folly Gras and Sea & Sands festivals and the Follypalooza Cancer Benefit, and proceeds go toward good causes.  For just this event, admission is $5 advance, $10 at the door.  It’s free for Folly residents and kids 12 and under.

Center Street redesign

By the way, last year Folly Beach redesigned Center Street, improving its flow as well as pedestrian safety.  Taste of Folly 2017 marked the official kickoff of the new design, when Center Street was closed to vehicles for the event.

Instead of a four-lane road as it was in the past, Center Street  –  the “gateway to the city” –  now has three lanes.  There’s one in each direction, plus a designated turning lane.  Each lane is now 12 feet wide, as opposed to just nine feet wide in the past.
