Charleston is a city with a long and layered history behind it. This rich history is reflected in every aspect of the city’s daily life—from music to cuisine, architecture, and art. But without the right organization to preserve this cultural heritage, the coming generations might not have a chance to enjoy the great city like we do now. This is why the Preservation Society of Charleston is dedicated to protecting, recognizing, and advocating for the historic places in the Lowcountry. This includes Charleston itself, of course. The society has initiated many campaigns, including the famous “Seven to Save,” which works hard to preserve seven of the most treasured buildings in the Lowcountry.

Seven to Save

Some people might walk by the ruins of the Old Sheldon Church in Beaufort County without giving it a second look, but as all lovers of great architecture know, the true beauty lies in the hidden details. This church has a story to tell, but only if you care to listen. Besides Old Sheldon Church, the initiative also includes a brick house ruin in Edisto Island which is part of this place’s French Huguenot heritage. The Hampstead Square is another reminder of the astonishing history of this town; it’s here where African American leaders used to rally in the 19th century.

Hard Hat Tours

The society also offers a lot of tours all year round. Some of these tours, like the walking tours, give the visitors a chance to explore the hidden beauty of this city. But the hard hat tours stand out. These tours give you an authentic experience unlike any other. You can see for yourself what a vibrant culture the city of Charleston truly is. If you want to book a tour or get involved, you can call them at 843.722.4630, email at preserve@preservationsociety.org, or visit their main office at 147 King Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
