A Scenic and Historic Landmark in Downtown Charleston
Once serving as a fortified defensive seawall strategic to the survival of Charleston in the mid-1700s, the Battery now functions as a place for scenic strolls and diving into Charleston's antebellum past. It is located at the southern tip of the peninsula on which Charleston sits, at the junction of the Ashley River and the Cooper River. All along the Battery (named for Broughton's Battery, before it became Fort Wilkins), you and your guests can soak up the sights of ornate and colorful antebellum homes, sweeping views of the Charleston Harbor, and a backdrop consisting of famous sites like Fort Sumter, Castle Pinckney, and the Sullivan's Island Lighthouse in the distance. Walking tours are often given through the Battery and its historic neighborhood,bespecially along the iconic and photo-worthy Rainbow Row, which boasts gorgeous and charming pastel colored homes. Beyond Rainbow Row, you'll see two- and three-story mansions worth millions of dollars, many of which allow visitors to tour through their grounds and look as though they've come straight out of the classic film Gone with the Wind. The highlight of the Battery, however, is White Point Garden. Named for the bleached oyster shells that once blanketed the ground, White Point Garden is home to five and a half acre park that houses replicas and memorials of cannons, statues, markers, and more from various wars (with many paying homage to the Civil War), battles, and famous figures throughout Charleston's history. See busts and statues dedicated to the pirate Stede Bonnet, the crew of the H.L. Hunley, and the poet, novelist, and historian William Gilmore Simms. There's also a bandstand from 1907 used to host weddings and outdoor events. No matter which aspect of the Battery most piques your interests, you and your guests are sure to have a pleasant time.
