Bark Park
Open from sunrise to sunset, the Bark Park gives your four-legged friends a chance to enjoy interaction with other dogs and explore a large fenced area. Your luxury rental home has a large backyard, but doesn’t offer your dog all of the unique scents and opportunities for playtime that come with visiting fellow canines. Typical dog park rules apply here; your dog must be leashed upon entering and leaving the park, all dogs must have current rabies vaccinations, and owners are responsible for all actions of their dog. Even those that don’t have a pet with them can enjoy watching a rambunctious group of dogs playing together at the Bark Park. While the Bark Park is open for most of the day, it does close on Wednesdays from 10:00am until 12:00pm for weekly cleaning. Visitors bringing their dogs must be at least eighteen years or older, and can only have one child aged twelve years or older accompany them into the park. Puppies under the age of five months, aggressive dogs, and female dogs in heat are not allowed in the park, unfortunately.
Frisbee Golf Course
The Isle of Palms Recreation Center also offers a Frisbee golf course on its grounds. This is a perfect way to soak up the sun while exploring much of the isle’s vast recreational facilities. Frisbee golf is a laid-back sport that still offers the competitive nature of more traditional sports; if you can throw a Frisbee, then you can play! The eighteen-hole course starts at the black mailbox next to the bike rack, which contains scorecards, pencils, and a map for your convenience. Look for red flags indicating where the next hole will be. Your best bet for holing out and scoring will be to ricochet your Frisbee off of the various objects near the hole; more often than not, you will find trees, poles, and other objects that are suited to this playing strategy. If you lose any Frisbees or have someone join you, extra Frisbees can be checked out at the front desk of the Isle of Palms Recreational Department.
Cardio Room
The cardio room is an indoor alternative for those looking to exercise. Head to the treadmill when it’s rainy in Charleston, or utilize the exercise bikes when the wind doesn’t agree with your beachside riding. All individuals using the cardio room must be at least sixteen years old, and patrons are expected to clean the machines after use. Hours at the cardio room vary, but the facility is open on Monday through Saturday. On Mondays, you can use the room from 7:00am until 6:00pm. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the room is available from 7:00am until 5:30pm. You can use the room between 7:00am and 5:00pm on Fridays, and from 9:00am until 5:00pm on Saturdays. On Wednesdays, the room is open from 7:00am until 7:00pm, but closes from 8:00am until 9:00am.
Other Activities at the Isle of Palms Rec Center
Besides these three features, the Isle of Palms Recreation Center offers much more, including baseball fields, an additional softball field, basketball courts, tennis courts, a soccer field, a playground, a picnic shelter, an indoor gymnasium, and even a library! The center also hosts a number of periodic events, such as Music in the Park, taekwondo classes and tournaments, classes on puppy training, and holiday gatherings, such as the annual Easter egg hunt. During the spring and summer months, there are a number of weeklong kids’ programs available for both residents and non-residents, from sports camps to acting, arts, and themed educational camps and fieldtrips. Adults can enjoy boot camps, yoga classes, core training, barre classes, line dancing, Zumba, tai chi classes, and walking trails. After you’ve finished up at the Isle of Palms recreation center, you can head to the beach for some seaside relaxation, or grab a bite to eat at restaurants like Long Island Café, Acme Lowcountry Kitchen, or the Refuge. Banana Cabana and Coconut Joe’s Beach Grill are also well-known for their refreshing frozen tropical cocktails, while Luke ‘n Ollie’s Pizzeria is great for a casual slice of pizza. If you’re looking for other recreational pursuits beyond the Isle of Palms recreation center, we recommend water-based sports like surfing, kiteboarding, boogie boarding, paddle boarding, and swimming. Fishing on Breach Inlet and golfing at Wild Dunes are also popular local activities.
