The Lowcountry has a myriad of fun festivals that happen in all seasons, all throughout the calendar year near our beach rentals Charleston. I’m not talking about rare, once in a blue moon thing like the Great American Eclipse. I’m talking festivals and events that take place year in and year out.
Some of the biggies include SEWE, Spoleto, Piccolo Spoleto, MOJA, Flowertown, the Cooper River Bridge Run, the Festival of Homes and Gardens, just to name a very few. They are a big draw for people coming to our SC vacation rentals, since they’re convenient to both our Isle of Palms vacation rentals and a Folly Beach house Charleston.
Another big festival that normally would be taking place soon is in the news his year. I’m talking the Taste of Charleston Festival – the beloved event at Boone Hall Plantation where you can sample your way through Charleston cuisine without leaving one locale. It was a fun event just across the IOP Connector from your luxury house on Isle of Palms.
Sadly, it is not happening this year. It’s a bit of a shock since it has taken place for the last 36 years. Normally it would happen around the last weekend in September. Apparently the powers that be, the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association, is currently looking for a new venue for next year.
Apparently the group is undergoing some reorganization and hopes to tweak the format to be more inclusive of other food options, such as food trucks. According to Randall Goldman, the GCRA’s chairman, “We want to get some new folks with new energy. We all feel we need to broaden the scope of the type of restaurants that are reflected.”
Here’s more on the story from the Post & Courier.

STOMPING OF THE GRAPES
Saturday August 26th is the 14th annual Grape Stomping Festival at Deep Water Vineyard & Firefly Distillery (formerly known as Irvin-House Vineyards).
It takes place at 6775 Bears Bluff Road in Wadmalaw Island. The cost is $10 per car in advance, $20 at the gate, and part of the proceeds will be given to Sea Island charities. There will be food as well as tastings available for purchase… Home Team BBQ, Dave ‘n Dubs, Gidget Gourmet, Rolled Quesadillas and others will provide the food. Solid Country Gold and McKenna Andrews will provide live music.
But the main attraction is the grape stomping contest, inspired by the famous 1956 episode of I Love Lucy. Teams of two people each (the Stomper and the Swabber) will have three minutes to stomp 20 pounds of fresh muscadine grapes with bare feet. The one that produces the most juice, wins. And of course, you are encouraged to dress like Lucille Ball from the iconic TV scene. In fact, concurrent to the stomping contest will be a Lucy Look-A-Like Contest.
See above pic for costume and hair ideas.
You are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets but not coolers. There will be plenty of tastings available, as well as fun for the kids (mechanical shark, jump castle, Paint Pixie face painter). Gates open at 10:00 a.m. Here’s the schedule…
10:00 – Gates Open
