Holiday happenings seem to be multiplying as if by magic. Charleston is definitely a great place to spend the Christmas season, especially if you’re lucky enough to be booked in a Charleston beach house, whether it’s a luxury house on Isle of Palms or a Folly Beach house Charleston.
As that last BLOG showed, there’s a whole lotta holiday happening this weekend, like multiple holiday markets and Second Sunday on King/Holiday Edition, the Holiday Parade of Boats, and the Mount Pleasant Christmas Parade, which is especially convenient to our Isle of Palms vacation rentals. Well, there are a few more things to add to the mega-list.
Another Parade (or two)!
If you’re in Folly Beach rentals Charleston, there’s an option that’s very convenient for you – it’s the Folly Beach Christmas Parade, and it’s going on tomorrow – Saturday, December 12th. The fun starts at 1:00 p.m. at the corner of West Ashley Avenue and 2nd. After the parade, you can sip hot chocolate, roast marshmallows and visit with Santa himself in Folly River Park.
Then on Sunday, there’s yet another holiday parade going on the area. It’s the annual Summerville Christmas Parade, and this year’s theme is “A Storybook Christmas.” It starts at 2:00 p.m. at West 4th North Street, then turn right onto Main, right on West Richardson, and right on Hickory. It’s not particularly close to our beach house rentals Charleston SC… but hey – if you are a Christmas parade aficionado, you have the potential of seeing four different ones during this one weekend alone – Folly Beach (Saturday afternoon), the Charleston Parade of Boats (Saturday evening), Summerville (Sunday afternoon), then Mount Pleasant (Sunday evening).
Take a Holiday Run/Walk
If you’re interested in doing something a bit more active than just watching a parade and voting for your favorite float, you might consider taking part in yet another beloved local holiday race/walk, the Reindeer Run 5K. This comes on the heels of last month’s Turkey Day Run and Gobble Wobble 5K … which ended up having a record number of registrants (8,216!) and 7,539 finishers. These impressive stats will likely land the event in the top 10 5Ks in the country this year. And from all accounts, people had a blast taking part in it.
The Reindeer Run normally takes place the first Saturday in December, but had to reschedule this year due to a conflict (with a cruise ship, of all things). That hasn’t dampened the fun at all, and if anything makes it even more festive as it’s closer to Christmas. This year is the 25th annual installment, so it promises to be extra special. The race promises a great combo of creative costumes, prize money, children and dogs (allowed!) and free beer for those of age.
The Reindeer Run is jolly jog or jaunt (5K, or in American terms 3.1 miles) through the streets of downtown Charleston to get you in the mood for Christmas and is perfect for all fitness levels. There will be awards for kids 6 & under and adults to 99. If your Reindeer isn’t as fit as Rudolph, walk the course and enjoy all the festivities along the way. Either way, come dressed in your holiday costumes to win fabulous prizes. Runners start at 9:00 a.m., walkers at 9:05 a.m. The race begins and ends in front of Southend Brewery on East Bay, and it has a very renown after party and live music by the Cordovans. It’s also pet friendly, is a terrific fundraiser for MUSC’s Children’s Hospital, and is sponsored by Half-Moon Outfitters. It’s convenient from all our SC vacation rentals. Online registration is over, but you can register in person today until 6:30 p.m. at the Omar Shrine Temple in Mount Pleasant, a very short drive from our Isle of Palms luxury rentals. It’s $40 adults, $30 for kids. Race day registration will be available tomorrow morning for $50 from 7:00 a.m. till 8:00 a.m.
Also, for the serious runners in our midst or in your Charleston beach house, there’s the 38th annual Kiawah Island Golf Resort Marathon and Half Marathon, going on tomorrow, Saturday Dec. 12th as well. The weather looks to be ideal this weekend, and registrations numbers appear to be on track to be really strong for the event – around 1,000 for the full marathon and 2,800 for the half.

And last but not least, a very special celestial event…
This is the Christmas season, after all, so it’s no surprise that the heavens would be in on the celebrations as well.
Get set for the best meteor shower of the year, the Geminids, which will be visible this Sunday night into Monday morning. It will start around 9 or 10 p.m. Sunday and should be especially visible since it’s a crescent moon that will set early, making it even easier to spot them. The Geminids produce more meteors per hour than any other shower, they travel 79,000 mph, and often produce actual fireballs.
Meteor showers are best seen away from the lights of the city… so in other words, the ideal spot would be walking along the ocean in front of your Charleston beach house!
