This is a great time to be staying in a luxury house on Isle of Palms. First off, a couple quick follow ups. This past Tuesday was the first loggerhead turtle release of the season (see this BLOG), and boy was it a cool one. Officials estimate more than 2,000 people showed up to wish the five turtles well as they returned to the surf. As the aquarium team unloaded each one, little children help up banners showing the name of the soon-to-be-freed turtle. Each one was a bit bigger than the last… until by the time they got to the last boy, Reese, it took four and eventually five people to carry the 200-pound loggerhead all the way past the cheering crowd to the ocean. They did a neat cover story in the Post & Courier, where they featured one of the loggerheads, Boyles, who was basically blind when they brought him in. One of the loyal turtle hospital staff lovingly nursed him back to health until he was well enough to return to the wild. I’ll never forget a while back, talking to some folks standing next to us. They had come all the way from AUSTRALIA just to witness the release of these majestic creatures. There’s nothing like a little live music and some good local food to set a nice mood.
