If you’re here this weekend in one of our luxury beach house rentals SC, be it one of our Isle of Palms vacation rentals or perhaps a Folly Beach house Charleston, you may see an unusual sight -- people lugging around treasured family heirlooms. A gigantic oil painting of a pastoral scene… their great-grandfather’s special chair… Aunt Gertie’s vintage vase.
That’s because the powerhouse show that gave PBS its greatest hit in years (well, that and Downton Abbey) is coming to town. Yes, it’s Antiques Roadshow, and it is here in Charleston today. It’s the final stop on their 2015 Tour, and they’ve saved the best for last! Of course, if you’ve been to our beach house rentals Charleston SC before and spent any time in our fair city, you know there’s no shortage of antiques in these parts. The downtown peninsula is basically one giant antique. Not surprisingly, the Roadshow has visited Charleston before, but it was fifteen years ago, in the summer of 2000. Matter of fact, PBS recently re-aired parts of that visit in “Vintage Charleston,” where they show certain appraisals from that show, then tell what the value is today. It’s interesting to see how things have fared. Some have dropped, some have stayed the same, and some have appreciated quite a bit. Here’s a link where you can watch this episode, “Vintage Charleston,” online, from your Charleston beach house: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/ontour/ (PBS’ description of the episode: Look back to 2000 and learn what has since happened in the antiques market. Highlights include Newcomb College vases, Fred Meyer photographs, ca. 1900, and a Léon Julien Deschamps bronze. Learn which item is now worth $55,000-$60,000? (run time 53:10). Premiere date: 7.27.2015) A visit from the Roadshow is a big deal, and it attracts people from all over the country, not just that particular city or region. Tickets are free, but they are notoriously hard to get, as I discovered a few years ago when trying to obtain some for friends who wanted to attend a show in Tennessee. Thousands upon thousands of people apply, and they are given out randomly well in advance of the taping. So alas, no tickets are available at the door. If you happen to be one of the lucky ones with a ticket, here are their FAQs for visitors to the 2015 tour: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- You must have a ticket to enter the event.
- Each ticket holder can bring two items (and must bring at least one item). We do not prescreen ticket holders’ items and cannot suggest which items ticket holders should choose to bring.
- If you contact a Roadshow appraiser regarding the item(s) you plan to bring to the event, then we cannot consider the item(s) for taping.
- Your item(s) must fit through a standard door.
- Vehicles, stamps, stock certificates, paper currency, coins, bicycles, tools, fossils, glass fire extinguishers, explosives or hazardous materials cannot be appraised.
- If you plan to bring an antique or vintage firearm for appraisal, please read important information in our FAQ.
- If you plan to bring a painting for appraisal, please be prepared for the possibility of an extra-long wait in line. You’re welcome to bring a painting, but please keep in mind you may not have to wait as long for an appraisal of a different type of object.
- Please do not arrive more than 30 minutes before the entrance time on your ticket.
- You must be able to carry or move your item throughout the event. We do not provide dollies or carts or assistance of any kind. You can bring your own cart or dolly as long as it does not have metal wheels.

The event takes place at the Charleston Area Convention Center. The address is 5000 Coliseum Drive, a convenient drive from all our SC vacation rentals, both Isle of Palms luxury rentals and Folly Beach rentals Charleston.
